Keyhole Procedure for Mitral Valve Repair- How Successful is It

The whole procedure as the name suggests is a minimally invasive approach to treat damaged or blocked mitral valve by the use of a small tube-like structure known as a catheter. The procedure is carried out by making 3 to 4 small keyholes on the side of the patient's chest through which the catheter is passed. A microscopic camera also passed through one of the holes, which helps to direct and guide the doctors by helping to generate live images on a large screen. The procedure is a result of the latest technology advancements in the field of medicine and is robotically assisted. Robotic cardiac surgery has proved to be a turning point in the medical world by making it possible for the patients, who were not considered to be eligible for the traditional open heart surgery, to get themselves treated.

Keyhole surgery is one of the safest and most effective ways that is recommended by a lot of doctors nowadays. Unlike the traditional heart surgery which is accompanied by a lot of complications, keyhole surgery ensures minimal complications and a shorter recovery period. Robotic mitral valve repair surgery has successfully helped to treat many patients, even those suffering from diabetes and hypertension.

Although the procedure is quite new, it has been a lot of popularity in the past few years and is one of the most trusted procedures in the field of cardiology. The latest research in the field shows that out of 2300 patients who underwent treatment for Mitral valve repair between 2011 and 2016, 576 patients underwent the keyhole surgery and were treated with a success rate of more than 90 per cent along with 372 other patients who underwent the robotic surgery.

The procedure is carried out under the influence of anaesthesia and takes about 3 to 4 hours. The patient is kept under observation for some time and is discharged within a week. The precautionary measures to be followed are the same as that in the case of traditional open heart surgery. The patient may up for physiotherapy for a faster recovery. You may even consult a dietician for a proper diet plan that will help you to avoid any such problem in future. It is recommended to visit your doctor for regular check-ups to ensure that there is no complication. However before opting for any procedure take expert advice as the procedure does not suit everyone.
