Can Mitral Valve Prolapse In Heart Be Treated With Medication?

A mitral valve prolapse occurs when blood starts flowing into two directions instead of one. It happens due to a defect in the valve’s leaflets or flaps whose primary function is to regulate the flow of blood. In such a scenario, the heart won’t be able to pump the correct amount of blood and hence, a leaky heart valve or regurgitation occurs. A doctor will usually diagnose it by using a stethoscope to listen to your heartbeats. In case you have a mitral valve prolapse, your doctor might hear a click like sound, or your doctor may hear a heart murmur as well. Furthermore, the doctors who performed mitral valve surgery in Gurgaon will always ask to undertake a few more tests to know if it’s minor and can be treated with medication or surgery is needed for ensuring the safest option.

If it's a minor one, it can be treated with medication, or you may not need treatment at all. However, if a doctor examines and notices that it can cause complications in the near future he may advise a mitral valve repair or mitral valve replacement surgery. Mostly, doctors prefer mitral valve repair surgery as they find it easy because of less risk and complexity than the replacement surgery. But certain valves can’t be repaired and hence, doctors have to perform mitral valve replacement surgery.

A heart specialist in Gurgaon suggests that people who suffer from mitral valve prolapse and show no significant symptoms then they don’t need any treatment. However, a doctor may prescribes certain medications to treat mitral valve prolapse if he observes certain symptoms like - pain in the chest, unusual heart rhythm often known as hearing a murmur or any other complications. Few commonly given for mitral valve prolapse treatment are as follows:-

  • Beta-blockers. These are given to slow down the heartbeat with less pressure and it reduces the blood pressure. It works by relaxing the blood vessels by a better flow of blood.
  • Diuretics. At times when a problem occurs due to excess fluids then your doctor may give you diuretics to remove excess fluids from your lungs.
  • Heart rhythm medications. To prevent irregular heart rhythms your doctor may prescribe an antiarrhythmic medication, such as flecainide, amiodarone, and propafenone. These works by balancing electrical signals in the heart tissue and thereby, regulates your heart rhythm.
  • Aspirin. In order to reduce the risk of formation of blood clots due to mitral valve prolapse and due to the history of strokes, doctors prescribe aspirin in such cases.
  • Prescription anticoagulants. These medications help in preventing blood clots due to atrial fibrillation.

Although, if the mitral valve prolapse is mild it will be treated with medications, however, in case of severe mitral valve regurgitation, mitral valve repair doctors opt for surgical procedures cause if regurgitation prolongs it may weaken the heart. Therefore, either open-heart surgery is done or minimally invasive or robotic mitral valve surgery is done.

In mitral valve repair surgery, your own valve is preserved and it is mostly preferred treatment in case of mitral valve prolapse. Here, the surgeon can modify the original valve by either reconnecting valve flaps or by removing the surplus valve tissues.

Valve replacement surgery is only performed when there is no possibility of valve repair surgery. Here artificial valves are implanted.

Thus, depending upon the condition of severity and the symptoms found your doctor will decide if medication is the best alternative or not.
