Aortic Valve Replacement and After Care

Aortic valve replacement surgery is the medical procedure used to replace a damaged section of the aortic valve with an artificially made aortic valve that carries out all the functions of the main valve and gives the patient a better chance at life.

The aortic valve is a part of the heart which is the main organ of the circulatory system responsible for the continuous flow of blood around the body to various organs. The deoxygenated blood is carried to the heart from where it is sent to sent to the lungs for oxidation. The oxygenated blood is then pumped to various different organs of the human body via various chanels. The most important of these channels is the aortic valve. The aortic valve acts as a passage for the blood leaving the heart. It is quite flexible and also helps to prevent the backward flow of blood. This  the aortic valve plays a very important role in the normal functioning of the heart which in turn is very crucial for the life of the humans.

Aortic valve replacement surgery is performed on patients suffering from aortic stenosis. It is a condition in which a person's arteries get blocked due to excess accumulation of impurities like cholesterol and calcium build up in our blood due the consumption of unhealthy food. Old age may also be a risk factor that increases the vulnerability of a person to develop aortic stenosis. The aortic valve may lose its elasticity and block the path for the free flow of blood.

Aortic stenosis can lead to shooting pain in the chest, difficulty in breathing, unstable heartbeat, swelling and numbness in limbs, toes and fingers, palpitation, unconsciousness and nausea. If the problem is left untreated it can even lead to the death of the patient. The most common type of valve replacement surgery is TAVI (Transcatheter aortic valve implantation) also known as TAVR (Transcatheter aortic valve replacement). The procedure is very simple and involves the use of a catheter fixed with a balloon like structure to Implant the new valve. The catheter is introduced via the groin or a small incision made on the chest or the arm of the patients. Since the surgery is minimally invasive, there is no wastage of blood.

The surgery has told as a boom for millions of patients who suffered from aortic stenosis. The procedure is very patient friendly and aimed at removing any kind of blockage in the arteries. After the surgery, the patient does not feel any of the symptoms and can easily carry out various day to day activities.

However after the surgery it  is very important to keep certain things in mind. You might experience some pain for a day or two for which you will be given certain painkillers. In order to nullify any chance of developing infections the patient needs to take antibiotics and properly sterilize the wound of incision. We all know the importance of the normal functioning of our heart and hence it is important to keep our heart in a good health. After the surgery it should be made sure that the patient avoids all kind of stress and strain.

Consumption of healthy food especially green leafy vegetables also help to prevent any chance of developing aortic stenosis in future. Unhealthy fats, smoking and drinking alcohol may also trigger aortic stenosis, hence these should be strictly avoided. Since people suffering from diabetes and hypertension should try to keep the blood sugar levels and blood pressure levels, respectively, under control. All these steps increase the success rate of the surgery and speeden up the healing process as well as help to reduce the risks of developing the problem in future.
