What Ails Heart Valve? What Are The Treatments Available?

A well-functioning heart is a major sign of a healthy individual but if the opposite happens, the affected individual can face life-threatening risks. The failure of the heart to perform properly can be attributed to many diseases and disorders, out of which the conditions of a faulty heart valve will be dealt with here. The functions of the heart valve are facilitated to maintain the supply of oxygenated blood from the heart to the body and the supply of the deoxygenated blood in the opposite. But what can possibly trigger the heart valves to malfunction?

These are some of the causes enumerated by a friend of mine who is a cardiovascular surgeon with amazing experience in the field of complicated treatments such as composite graft surgery:

  • Aging
  • Calcification
  • Congenital defects
  • Degenerative valve disease
  • Genetic link
  • Infective endocarditis
  • Injuries
  • Mediastinal radiation therapy
  • Rheumatic fever

Apart from these, the lifestyle of the individual and their diet can also be responsible for leading to the progression of a faulty heart valve, it may leak or regurgitate. In some cases, non-surgical treatments may keep the patient safe from any major threat to health. But in severe cases, minimally invasive surgeries or even complicated surgical programs which may need a professional coronary bypass graft maker may be required for successful outcomes. These are the possible alternatives for healing a damaged heart valve:

  • Left untreated or follow-up

Many cases of a faulty heart valve can be left untreated if they do not pose any severe threat to the health of the individual. For instance, healthy adults suffering from a mild leaky tricuspid valve do not have to worry about a treatment course because the condition of the valve is asymptomatic in most of these cases. This may be discovered incidentally, usually causes no problems, and does not require treatment.

Some type of faulty heart valves has to be observed and if they do not inflict any such damage to the heart and the overall health of the patient, then with few lifestyle changes, the patient can continue to avoid any major threat. If doctors diagnose a slight leaky tricuspid valve, they recommend follow-ups in some cases but patients suffering from aortic valve regurgitation are majorly prescribed with observation until a certain period of time. Similarly, the leaky mitral valve may be not dealt with any treatment per se but observation becomes necessary, as anyone from the top heart doctors in Gurgaon would advise.

  • Medications

Medications can be provided for both short term and long term periods. Life-long medications often part of the treatment program for complex cardiovascular problems including the faulty valves. Medications are provided after evaluating the underlying cause of the faulty heart valve. For instance, doctors prescribe vasodilators which ate blood pressure medications for patients suffering from aortic valve regurgitation. Whereas in cases like tricuspid valve regurgitation, medications are not recommended because pulmonary hypertension may be the underlying cause.

  • Diureticsor water pills

Diuretics or water pills are considered as the treatment when the condition of the faulty heart valve is causing body swelling oredema. These pills are provided to alleviate the body swelling and hence are temporarily provided. Diuretics are commonly prescribed for the condition of severe aortic valve regurgitation.

  • Surgery

Surgical repair such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and robotic mitral valve replacement are recommended in certain cases. Not all patients are eligible for undergoing surgical intervention. For instance, solely replacing the faulty tricuspid valve is not a regular recommendation by the experts of cardiac valvuloplasty in India but they will agree for a surgical repair or replacement of a severely leaking or faulty aortic valve.
